^ Held as a round-robin competition in 2000 and 2001, having previously been decided via a Grand Final.
^^ Decided by round-robin format in 2002 and 2003, before a Grand Final format was introduced in 2004.
The 2008 NWL wasn't held, due to the national body conducting a review of the structure of the women's game which was to take effect from the start of the next decade.
* Revamped as an age-restricted Youth League. The first competition ran in the first quarter of 2011 (for the 2010 year), while subsequent competitions have taken place in the final quarter of each calendar year.
** Age restrictions removed
The 2021 NWL wasn't held due to Covid-19, but a South-Central Series took place involving the four teams based south of Taupo. Southern United won their first domestic honour.
The 2022 NWL was the first to incorporate club sides with regional representative sides. The top four place-getters in the Northern Premier Women's League qualified for the NWL, joining the four teams from the South-Central Series to make up the new-look NWL.
