Competition History

The Weir Rose Bowl Tournament is a well-known competition for girls and boys in northern region age-grade football and there is a lot of pride involved. Like many football competitions, the trophy for this tournament was donated by a person who was passionate about the beautiful game and very involved with football.

Tom Weir has a lasting memorial of his contribution to junior football in the form of the Weir Rose Challenge Bowl for annual competition for Under 12s.

Tom Weir was Metro College’s delegate to the Junior Management Committee of the Auckland Football Association from the late 1940s. He then became an independent member and took over the time consuming job of fixtures officer, a post he held for eight years, working through the weekly job with an antiquated and well-worn typewriter.

He spent many years as a junior representative selector, eventually deciding, in 1954, to donate the impressive trophy bearing his name. Although the tournament was initially for boys, since 2003 a girls Tournament has operated in conjunction to the boys Tournament due to the growing number of girls playing soccer.

The women's competition was introduced in 2004, and played at representative level for the next fifteen seasons. But in 2019, it was contested by leading club sides from each of the three federations. A year later, the effects of the worldwide coronavirus saw entries from the Waikato only, with teams from further north unable to travel because of the prevailing restrictions.
