Karen "Smiler" Rodger
What Karen may have lacked in skill and natural ability, she more than made up for with her whole-heartedness, determination and leadership qualities. Naturally left-footed, she scored her only goal in senior women’s club soccer on the first day of the 1994 season, and was a key defender in the victorious Auckland U-18 squad which won the Dana Cup in 1990.
Auckland’s Sportswoman of the Year in 1991, she was a young lady (born August 18, 1975) for whom I had a great deal of time, both as a player and as a person - I could always rely on her to brighten up any given Sunday morning with her trademark smile!
