Goal Feast At Ferguson
by Jeremy Ruane
Goalmouth incidents galore punctuated Saturday's Bluebird Northern League First Division clash at Ferguson Park, as Onehunga Sports edged home 6-4 over Birkenhead United in one of the most amazing games of football I've ever witnessed.
Sports opened the scoring through Mark Gleeson after just ninety-three seconds. But the game really burst into life as the half-hour mark approached, when an eleven-minute spell produced no less than five goals!!
James Stewart started the sequence, equalising for Birkenhead after twenty-nine minutes. Neville Konz lobbed United 'keeper Mike Kininmonth two minutes later, to put Sports 2-1 ahead, before Ian Wafer equalised again for the visitors in the 33rd minute.
Straight from the restart, Sports struck again - Peter Bonkovich this time. Not to be outdone, a ferocious Andy Wafer free-kick for United after forty minutes brought about the 3-3 half-time scoreline.
The goals continued to flow in the second spell. Konz's dead-ball accuracy created two goals in five minutes for Sports, with captain Reece Culpitt and goal-machine Gleeson the scorers, in the 52nd and 57th minutes respectively.
At 5-3, the match looked over, but United kept chasing the unlikely, and were rewarded for their persistence with a fourth goal in the 89th minute, through John Nicholson.
Sports came back again, and had the last word in injury time, as Scott Tibbotts tapped in on the far post to bring an end to a fascinating encounter.
There were several other chances for both teams. United's closest misses came through the efforts of Ian Wafer and Stewart, while Sports' player-coach, Tony Porter, along with team-mates Konz and Phillip Huff, all went close to adding to their team's goal tally.
Porter was "very happy" with the result afterwards. So, too, were the spectators - ten goals in a match is hardly a frequent event. But the verbal abuse of linesman Phil Ainscombe by a vocal minority left a sour taste in the mouth, and diverted attention from an exciting football spectacle - a credit to both teams.
