Wellington v Canterbury - the first ever inter-provincial match
While Canterbury wore loose black shorts topped by a red and black sweater with black caps and flowing red tassles, Wellington (Aotea) wore short skirts over knickers. All players wore football boots and several had shin pads - a few sported silk stockings.
Nearly 2000 spectators, mainly all men, watched the game.
It was not good soccer, said The Christchurch Press, but it was clean and refreshing. Girls who knocked opponents over stopped and helped them up.
The Canterbury FA were delighted their takings at the game were a record for the park.
