The New Zealand Herald Future Stars of Sport awards, formerly known as the NZ Herald Junior Sports Awards, were first introduced in 1967, and since that time have recognised the country's top young achievers in sport.
A raft of Kiwi sporting greats are among past recipients of the honour, which is presented to five deserving rising stars each year.
The basis of the prize package for the winners generally comprises a $1500 training grant, an engraved medallion, and the support of the Millenium Institute, where the awards luncheon takes place.
As at the start of 2009, only five women's soccer players have been among the recipients of this honour over the years, contenders for which are called for each December.
