Departure of the Derelicts
21 November 2017 was a noteworthy day in the Port of Onehunga's recent history, as we finally said goodbye to two trawlers which had lain derelict alongside in the fishing basin for over three years apiece.

"Nausicaa Star" (berthed 22/8/14) and "Otapiri" (4/9/14) had become something of an eyesore 'round the back', so when Ports of Auckland negotiated their removal by Southern Ocean Specialists, there was relief all round that these unwelcome fixtures wouldn't be around for much longer.

The all-purpose tug "Sea Pelican" duly arrived in port on 14 November, and the process of preparing the derelicts for departure commenced apace - this photo was taken 24 hours later.

A week later, they were on their way, "Sea Pelican" towing the two trawlers down the Manukau Harbour, across the Bar, up the coast and around Cape Reinga en route to Henderson Creek for dismantling.

A series of photos and a video of their departure follow.
