Rollings
Rock On, Young Rolly
by Jeremy Ruane

Wingers are rare birds.
A dying breed, they say.
But this Jessica Rollings -
Boy, can she play!

She’ll take on defenders
And beat them for fun.
There’s no stopping Rolly
When she’s on the run!

She’s an out and out winger.
Left flank or right -
It matters not to Rolly
When she’s in full flight.

It’s a real treat to watch her
As she dashes past,
Tormenting opponents
From first whistle to last.

Sometimes she’ll skin them
Not once but twice,
Then cross - near or far post,
It’s inch-perfect, precise!

She was treated like ****
In two thousand and nine.
That’s not what you do
To a good friend of mine.

To see Rolly struggling,
Her confidence battered,
Her heart broken, bleeding,
Her self-belief shattered …

It saddened me deeply.
Please, never again.
It hurt most of all ‘cause
She’s a true champion.

She’ll fight tooth and nail
For the cause - give her all.
But to do so she needs
Support - and the ball!

By starving a winger
You’re killing the game.
Would football sans Matthews,
Finney, Garrincha, be the same?

Our Young Fern, Rolly,
Is one out the box.
She’s skilful and talented -
A cunning young fox.

Give her the ball
And free reign of the pitch.
Cue defenders aplenty
Calling Rolly a "b****!"

As our vibrant wing wizard
Sprints right on past,
Running rings round her rivals -
Too quick, too fast.

And too good to be left
On the sidelines again.
Rock on, young Rolly -
Keep playing your game.
