I'm on the hunt for old NZ football books and programmes, be they internationals, rep fixtures (e.g. matches against touring teams), National League matches, Chatham Cup Finals, Football Kingz and NZ Knights matches, club histories or, going way back in time, issues of Soccer Weekly (about which, more shortly, but sample pics are in the left-hand column).
Currently, I have programmes covering nearly 250 All Whites internationals and 80 Football Ferns fixtures in my collection. I haven't found time to collate and chronicle the bulk of my club football collection to date, but be assured it is sizable.
My ambition is to establish a NZ football museum in Auckland where we can house as much of our football memorabilia as possible, so that the history of the game to which all involved in it have contributed in some way, shape or form isn't lost, e.g. trophies and records being dumped because there's nowhere for them to be kept or displayed.
If you can help with donations of such material, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me via mailto:scousekiwi@gmail.com
SOCCER WEEKLY
Way back in the days when football in Auckland took place at Blandford Park then at Newmarket Park, both now long-lost venues to the game, the Auckland Football Association published a weekly programme called "Soccer", later renamed "Soccer Weekly" then "Rothmans Soccer League", examples of which can be seen on the left-hand side of this spiel.
The Wellington, Canterbury and Otago Football Associations published similar local chronicles, some of which I've acquired over time via my ongoing hunt for NZ football memorabilia.
The Auckland versions first appeared in 1945, and were issued each week during the season, with the 1978 season being the last year of publication, to my knowledge.
I am eager to get hold of as many copies as possible to add to my personal collection, as I'm eager to have as complete a record as possible of these publications for reference, and for the aforementioned NZ football museum project I'm quietly working away on, something which will be of significant benefit to football in NZ in its entirety.
If you have, or someone you know has, any issues of these weekly records of the local football scene from days gone by, please don't discard them - I'd love to take them off your hands, as there's a truckload of info in each issue which is of great use to me in recording the history of the game in NZ on this website.
Please contact me via mailto:scousekiwi@gmail.com if you've copies of "Soccer" which you're willing to pass onto a good home where I can guarantee they'll be well looked after! :-)
