Phoenix And "Diamonds" Score Twenty Between Them
by Jeremy Ruane
The goals were flowing like fine wine for two of Wellington's finest in the Central Region Premier Women's League on the first weekend in April, with United and Phoenix scoring twenty goals between them as they recorded emphatic away wins.

"The Diamonds" thrashed Waterside Karori 8-2 at Karori Park, picking up the Nora Watkins Memorial Shield in the process. Natalie Olson's five-goal salvo was the weekend's most impressive individual return, while Carolyn O'Reilly, Hannah Pilley and new signing Georgie Furnell also found the net for the visitors, with Renee Bacon's brace either side of half-time "The Magpies"' contribution to this goal-laden encounter.

Twenty-four hours later at Memorial Park, Wellington Phoenix handed Palmerston North United a 12-0 hiding, Katie Pugh leading the way with a hat-trick. Phoebe Hawes, Eliza Vincent, Anahera Easton and Maisy McDonald each chimed in with braces.

Bridie Christie was the odd one out, scoring just once in a one-sided affair which saw the visitors net seven goals in the opening 34 minutes, during which United made two substitutions in a bid to stem the flow of goals.

That scoreline was in stark contrast to that witnessed at Petone Memorial Park, where the home team and Marist Palmerston North battled out a scoreless draw. Across town at Boyd Wilson Park, substitute Isla Robertson struck with six minutes left to clinch a 1-0 win for Victoria University at Moturoa's expense. And at Bond Field, Taradale overpowered Miramar Rangers 3-0 thanks to goals from Hollie Gee, Johanna Nieuwenhuis and Caitlyn Turner.

It doesn't get any easier for PNU this week - they visit "The Diamonds"' Newtown Park home on Saturday, a day on which Moturoa and Petone meet at Onuku Taipari Domain. Miramar welcome the students to Dave Farrington Park, while at Arena Manawatu, Marist and "The Magpies" lock horns. On Sunday, Wellington Phoenix welcome Taradale to Fraser Park.

Dunedin City Royals and Otago University are making every post a winning one in the South Island Women's League so far, with both recording convincing wins in Christchurch over the weekend.

The students humbled Halswell United 8-0 at Halswell Domain, where Tara Ballie put through her own net to leave "The Hawks" trailing just four minutes into the match. Otago built on that via Aynsley Martin, Ruby Braithwaite and Isla Ganley, while Georgia Nixon and Madison Kay both struck twice on a day best forgotten by the home team.

Raegan Potter was also celebrating a brace of goals as she led "The Royals" to a second successive 5-0 win, this time at the expense of Nomads-Waimakariri United, who found themselves trailing to a Kylie Jones goal after just seven minutes at Tulett Park, where Amy Hislop and Madi McLean struck in the second spell.

Reigning champions Cashmere Technical returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Nelson Suburbs at Saxton Fields, where Samantha Crawford equalised Rafaela Da Costa Canal's third minute opener for the visitors. Petra Buyck swiftly restored Cashmere's lead before Lily Fisher made the points safe for Fred Simpson's charges just after the hour mark.

At Logan Park, Roslyn Wakari and Canterbury Universities shared the spoils, with Liv Deane giving the students the lead late in the first spell, only for Amelie East-Giles to equalise for "The Ponies" in second half stoppage time.

The leading teams are all playing at home in third round action this weekend, with just the one game on Saturday as Cashmere welcome "The Hawks" to Garrick Memorial Park. On the Sabbath, Coastal Spirit and Nelson meet at Tane Norton Park, while at Logan Park, "The Royals" take on "The Ponies" in a Dunedin derby at the same time as Otago tackles NWU.
