In 2008, the Mainland and Football South federations revived the concept of the Southern League in the form of the South Island Football Championship, to ensure that at the end of each season, there would be a champion club in the South Island.
Initially, the champions and runners-up in the respective Premier League competitions contested the title, but after a hiatus in 2010, this was revised to a one-off fixture between the champions of the Mainland and Football South Premier Leagues, with the venue alternating between each federation annually.
