Wins For Top Two In Both Central And Southern Regions
by Jeremy Ruane
With the clash of Victoria University and Petone being deferred until later in the season, leading duo Wellington United and Waterside Karori extended their advantage in the Central Region Premier Women's League with solid victories over the last weekend in June.

"The Magpies" took the overnight lead in the competition by mauling Moturoa 4-0 at Karori Park, with two goals in a minute from Rhianna Houghton and Kennedy Bryant affording the home team a 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the contest.

Bryant added her second before half-time, while Jessica Shilton ensured there was no prospect of a comeback from the travelling team when netting Karori's fourth goal on the hour to wrap up the convincing win.

"The Diamonds" were back on top come Sunday night, heading home from Taradale Park with a 3-0 win which was inspired by new signing Hannah Pilley. Her first goal for Wellington, on the half-hour, sent the visitors on the way to victory, with goals in the last fifteen minutes from Misha Koyari and Vanessa Taylor ending Taradale's hopes of a fightback.

In a rip-roaring encounter at Arena Manawatu, Marist Palmerston North and Seatoun shared four goals inside the opening quarter-hour before the home team eventually prevailed 5-3, scoring twice in the last seven minutes to seal a hard-earned victory.

Ruby-Aroha Gurnick struck twice for Marist inside the opening ten minutes, sandwiching Emmy Lantz's initial leveller for Seatoun, who drew level once again on the quarter hour courtesy Hannah Wignall.

Sarah Swinbanks restored "Les Verts"' lead approaching half-time, an advantage they maintained until fifteen minutes from the end, when Amy Foster netted Seatoun's third equaliser of the afternoon.

It needed goals from captain Grace Smith and substitute Kate MacPherson in the final seven minutes of play to clinch the points for Marist, thus ending winless Seatoun's stubborn resistance in this well-contested affair.

All roads lead to Karori Park on Saturday, as the only game of the weekend takes place in the form of a Kate Sheppard Cup quarter-final between Waterside Karori and Wellington Phoenix.

Cashmere Technical and Dunedin City Royals continue to make every post a winning one in the South Island Women's League, after both scored convincing victories over Dunedin-based rivals in their second round encounters.

Roslyn Wakari were afforded a baptism of fire in their first game of the campaign, hammered 10-0 by a rampant Cashmere team which never looked back once Aimee Phillips opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the third minute.

Within seven minutes, Lainey Altieri-Need and Margi Dias had made it 3-0, while after a brief respite a Freya Des Fountain own goal was swiftly followed by an Annalie Longo double strike, before Dias joined the Football Fern in scoring twice in the match.

Anna McPhie and Minah Van Dam added further to Roslyn's misery soon after the interval, while substitute Rosie Hayman brought up double figures for Cashmere five minutes from time in this English Park encounter.

Down the line at Tahuna Park, "The Royals" produced their most convincing display of the season against their closest cross-town rivals, humbling Otago University 4-0 with two goals in each half.

Toni Power struck twice before half-time while Hannah Mackay-Wright and Raegan Potter netted either side of the hour mark to bring up a tenth win of the campaign for the victors, who also scored their fiftieth goal of the season in this match.

Coastal Spirit returned home from their visit to Saxton Field in buoyant mood after beating Nelson Suburbs 4-1 and rediscovering the art of winning in the process. Holly Lyon gave the visitors the lead in the sixteenth minute, and they never looked back thereafter, Belinda Van Noorden and Melanie Cameron scoring either side of the interval to put the result beyond doubt.

Katherine Beuker reduced the deficit ten minutes from time, but Rebecca Wilson restored the three-goal margin for Kelly Almond's charges in stoppage time as Nelson began their South Island League campaign in the manner they have no intention of continuing.

There's just the one South Island League match scheduled this Saturday, with Roslyn welcoming Nelson to their Ellis Park home. All eyes will be on Tahuna Park on Sunday, however, with the season-long unbeaten records of "The Royals" and Cashmere going on the line when they meet in the Kate Sheppard Cup quarter-final.
