Cashmere Ends Mainland Title Drought
by Jeremy Ruane
Cashmere Technical claimed their first Mainland Premier Women's League title since 2016 on May 18, sweeping aside Nelson Suburbs 5-0 at Garrick Memorial Park to secure the silverware in style.

Shane Verma's charges scored three times in the minutes prior to the half-time whistle to seal the deal, after Anna McPhie had given them an initial lead, with Suburbs substitute Pip Coakley contributing the game's lone second half goal at the wrong end of the pitch.

In the must-win encounter at English Park, Coastal Spirit prevailed 3-1 over Halswell United to strengthen their hopes of joining Cashmere and Canterbury Universities in the South Island Women's League later in the campaign.

Lauren Dabner scored just before half-time to give Spirit a crucial lead which was doubled twenty minutes from time by Mel Cameron, on the occasion of her 250th appearance for the club - a tremendous achievement.

Substitute Amelia Newlands gave "The Hawks" hope seven minutes from time, but Laura Newman restored Spirit's two-goal advantage to confirm victory before Halswell's usual star turn, Rachel Brodie, rather blotted her copybook after the full-time whistle, earning herself a red card for behaviour towards match officials which was unbecoming of a footballer, gender regardless.

Jasmine Barrett scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot just after half-time as Nomads-Waimakariri United edged Selwyn United 1-0 at Foster Park, a result which leaves the joint venture needing victory over Coastal Spirit at Kendall Park on Saturday to have any hope of qualifying for the South Island Women's League at the expense of the inaugural winners of that competition.

The students square off against Cashmere at English Park in the other fixture that day, while on the Sabbath, a win for Nelson over Selwyn at Saxton Fields will see the home team reach double figures in the points column, with the third place-getters guaranteed a South Island Women's League berth.

The fourth-placed team in the Mainland competition face a play-off against the third-placed team in the Football South Premier Women's League - almost certainly Roslyn Wakari - to determine the other contenders in the six-team league.

Dunedin City Royals and Otago University secured their places in the SPWL with solid victories, and meet at Logan Park in the final round of Football South Premier Women's League action on Saturday to determine which of these unbeaten clubs will hold the silverware aloft.

The top-of-the-table clash in the Central Region Premier Women's League was marred by an injury to Petone's Rebecca Otte, who scored both her team's goals in their 2-2 draw with Wellington United at Petone Memorial Park.

A broken leg brought the Petone stalwart's game to a premature end, with "The Diamonds"' Bella Cartman and Natalie Olson scoring either side of Otte to earn a share of the spoils for the perennial title contenders.

An injury to the referee, who was unable to continue nor be replaced by either assistant, brought about a premature conclusion to the clash of reigning champions Waterside Karori and Victoria University at Karori Park. The abandoned game will be replayed at a later date.

Moturoa scored the most convincing victory of the weekend, Sasha Rasmussen scoring twice as they swept Seatoun aside 4-0 at Onuku Taipari Domain. Meanwhile, Marist Palmerston North twice came from behind to overcome Taradale 3-2 at Taradale Park on Sunday afternoon.

Kya Solomon twice put the home team in front in this encounter, but Marist restored parity soon after, and when captain Grace Smith struck seventeen minutes from time for the visitors, it proved suffice to put them in a buoyant mood for the long drive back to Palmerston North.

Marist and "The Magpies" meet in the game of the round at Arena Manawatu on Saturday, while Petone and Seatoun enjoy home advantage against Moturoa and Taradale later that day. On Friday evening, "The Diamonds" and the students square off under the Newtown Park floodlights.

The top-of-the-table clash in the Capital Premier Women's League was a proper goal-fest, with Petone coming from behind to prevail 9-4 over Upper Hutt City, led by Beth Whiteside's hat-trick.
