Built in Auckland by G.T. Niccol in 1932 for his own use, she was the last ship he ever constructed, and was acquired by the Northern Steam Ship Company within two years.
Powered by two Fairbank Morse engines, she served their purposes well, with very few incidents of note - two instances of strandings, three of rudder damage, and one collision - until 1961. She was employed on the Onehunga-Picton run in the 1950s, calling nine times sporting Northern's colours.
She was then sold to A.G. Frankham, and a year later was in the hands of Mr Greenslade of Nelson, who operated the Inter-Island Shipping Company. She was re-engined by her new owners, with two Caterpillar diesels giving "Waiotahi" a new lease of life on the Wellington - Kaiapoi trade.
She was laid up for sale on the Waimakariri River at Kaiapoi in 1967, before being purchased by F. Fawcett-Kay, of the Solomon Islands, the following year.
Her call at Onehunga was to complete the handover process, and she sailed for Honiara on 16 August 1968. She was scuttled off Rabaul in October 1973.
