Top Three Maintain Championship Placings
by Jeremy Ruane
The top three teams maintained their positions in the Lotto Northern Women's Championship over the last weekend in April, recording victories to solidify their early season form, with leaders FC Tauranga Moana maintaining their perfect start to the season with a third successive 3-1 win on home turf.

Central United were their latest victims, the visitors to Fergusson Park falling foul of three goals in a five minute spell around the quarter-hour mark, with Evaline Bruce, Kerri-Ann Jones and captain Ella Golding leading the celebrations, as did United's skipper, Nicole Loader, who scored the only goal of the second spell, despite their hosts having an abundance of fresh legs on the park - Central travelled south with just twelve players.

Franklin United also scored a 3-1 victory, making their trip to Melville United worthwhile. Britney Cunningham-Lee bagged a brace of goals, sandwiching the effort of team-mate Sarah Carpenter, while Victoria Gorter reduced the deficit for the Gower Park outfit seven minutes before half-time.

Onehunga Sports eased to a 3-0 win over Northern Rovers at Becroft Park on Friday night, Taylor Bell, Pip Meo and new signing Annie Byrne inflicting defeat upon the former Premier League side while keeping "The Green Machine" well entrenched
among the early promotion contenders.

The biggest win of the round unfolded at Shepherds Park, where Birkenhead United blitzed Manukau United 9-1, led by hat-tricks from Abby Chad and Jaime Govind. Charlotte England also chimed in for the victors, who benefitted from two "oggies" by the visitors, for whom the consistent Ashley Porter was on target at the right end of the park.

Sunday's fare this week sees "The Green Machine" and Tauranga locking horns at Waikaraka Park, while Central entertains Melville at Kiwitea Street. Manukau and Northern square off at Walter Massey Park, while Franklin and Birkenhead clash in what should be a spirited encounter at the Drury Sports Complex.
