The champagne corks were popping as Wellington United and Cashmere Technical celebrated their respective league title triumphs on the weekend, with the Cantabrians looking to complete a treble on Wednesday evening when they take on Halswell United in the Morrison Mitsubishi Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Final at English Park.
Needing to win to finish ahead of Dunedin City Royals on goal difference and retain the South Island Women's League title, Cashmere made no race of it at Saxton Fields on Sunday afternoon, a brace of goals apiece from Margi Dias and captain Lara Wall paving the way for a 5-0 win which was wrapped up in the final minute by Golden Boot winner Anna McPhie.
Twenty-four hours earlier, matters at Karori Park were far more complex. Both "The Diamonds" and reigning champions went into their clash with the Central Region Premier Women's League title on the line, and a win for either would secure them the silverware.
"The Magpies" went into the match holding the Nora Watkins Memorial Shield, a trophy United could only clinch by beating the home team. United's ace in the hole was a one-point lead on the table going into the contest, meaning they could afford a draw to take the league crown back to Newtown Park.
And a draw is what they got, 1-1 the outcome in a hard-fought affair which saw Kendall Pollock's goal on the half-hour for the home team matched halfway through the second spell by a Hope Gilchrist strike which proved priceless for United, champions after a two-year hiatus.
Both these teams will be joined in next season's league by Miramar Rangers, who edged out Palmerston North United 1-0 after extra time in their play-off encounter, Ella Wilson's 119th minute free-kick clinching victory for a team which lost just twice all season, one of those defeats coming in the Kate Sheppard Cup.
Details:
Waterside Karori 1 (K. Pollock (29)), Wellington United 1 (H. Gilchrist (68)) HT 1-0
Nelson Suburbs 0, Cashmere Technical 5 (L. Wall (24, 45), M. Dias (28, 54), A. McPhie (90)) HT 0-3

In the final round of Lotto Northern Women's Championship action, the main interest was in the battle for the Golden Boot, with FC Tauranga Moana's Briana Osborne needing to outscore Franklin United's Britney Cunningham-Lee by two goals on the last day of the season to add the individual honour to her team's title-winning campaign.
Osborne bagged a brace in the champions' 3-2 win at Northern Rovers, with Gigi Cliffe netting twice in the final five minutes to make things interesting at McFetridge Park after Tauranga substitute Jasmine Griffiths put the visitors in what was ultimately an unassailable position.
Across town at Waikaraka Park, second-placed Franklin United saw off Onehunga Sports 4-2, Sarah Carpenter leading the charge with a brace of goals. Substitute Ashleigh Downs also struck for the visitors, but it was "BCL"'s goal which mattered most, giving her a unique Golden Boot double, having won the honour in last season's Premier Women's League competition.
Pip Meo and Tessa Blakeborough - from the penalty spot - got it back to 3-2 for "The Green Machine" with ten minutes remaining on a day Erin Orchard's twenty-five yarder saw Melville United edge ten-woman Manukau United 1-0 at Gower Park, while Issy Gerrand's first half goal for Birkenhead United proved suffice to clinch a 1-0 victory over Central United at Kiwitea Street.
The promotion-relegation play-off is no nearer being confirmed, with Cambridge to meet either Onehunga-Mangere United or Papakura City, who meet at McLennan Park next Sunday with the title on the line. OMU go into the game with a one-point lead, but City have a game in hand - a trip to Northland - which will need to be played should this top-of-the-table tussle be drawn.

Central United 0, Birkenhead United 1 (I. Gerrand (30)) HT 0-1
Melville United 1 (E. Orchard (73)), Manukau United 0 HT 0-0
