A dramatic equaliser deep in stoppage time from the Lotto Northern Women's Championship's leading markswoman, Britney Cunningham-Lee, earned Franklin United a 2-2 draw at the Drury Sports Complex as they held league leaders FC Tauranga Moana in the game of the round on August 11.
Chloe Marthe gave Franklin the lead halfway through the first half of this battle royal, with Grace Duncan levelling matters five minutes before the interval. Briana Osborne gave the league leaders the edge on the hour, and it looked like they'd be taking all three points back to the Bay of Plenty until Cunningham-Lee struck at the death.
Onehunga Sports closed the gap on Tauranga to seven points, predictably running riot against Manukau United at Waikaraka Park, where the visitors fielded just ten players throughout this 9-0 hiding, a result which leaves United nine goals shy of conceding a century for the season.
Annie Byrne and Pip Meo led the way for "The Green Machine" with two goals apiece, with Kate Inwood, Robyn Fisher, Kelsey Elliot and second half substitutes Jess Freeman and Tessa Blakeborough all having reason to celebrate as the goal tally mounted throughout the afternoon.
Melville United celebrated qualifying for the National Youth League on Saturday by overcoming Birkenhead United 1-0 at Gower Park on Sunday to climb back into fourth spot on the table, substitute Nyah Nikau netting the winner seven minutes from time.
There's quite a tasty battle for fourth place shaping up in the last few weeks of the season, as the four teams in contention are covered by just four points after Central United thumped Northern Rovers 4-0 at Kiwitea Street.
Rovers, Melville's victims on Saturday, were behind the eight-ball twenty-four hours later, Sylvia McDougall scoring the first of her two goals just five minutes into the contest. Phoebe Donaldson doubled Central's lead halfway through the first half, with their other goals coming inside the last ten minutes, substitute Ane Dietz supplementing McDougall's second strike in stoppage time.
Birkenhead and Manukau kick off the weekend's action at Shepherds Park on Friday night, while Sunday's fare sees Tauranga welcoming Central to Links Avenue. Onehunga crosses the Harbour Bridge, destination Northern's McFetridge Park lair, while Melville and Franklin lock horns at Gower Park.
