Built by G.T. Niccol as an auxiliary ketch for the Northern Steamship Company, "Paroto" traded out of Auckland to numerous points north until 1948, when she was sold to Richardson & Co. Ltd, based in Napier.

Her time with them was short-lived, for a year later she came into the hands of the Collingwood Shipping Company in Nelson, for whom she made a couple of calls into Onehunga, testing the waters for a potential cargo service.

It wasn't to be, and in 1960 she changed hands again, the Inter-Island Shipping Company her new owners. She was converted to a full motor ship and served numerous South Island ports, most notably Kaiapoi - when visiting there in 1958 she became the first vessel to call at the port since World War Two!

It was on a voyage from Wellington to Kaiapoi on 3 August 1966 that "Paroto" met her fate, running aground at Point Gibson in Gore Bay, North Canterbury. She was sold as is, where is, for the princely sum of $70, and was dismantled.
