Big Scores And The Odd Upset In Kate Sheppard Cup Ties
by Jeremy Ruane
There were a few big scorelines and a couple of upsets in this weekend's Kate Sheppard Cup action around the country, while a recent former winner of the competition bowed out at the first hurdle after copping a three-goal defeat in the tie of the round.

NORTHERN REGION
Two of the Lotto Northern Women's Championship teams struck double-figure victories against lower-ranked opponents, Tauranga Moana's 10-0 win at Lakes inspired by the individual performance of the round as Grace Duncan struck five times, four of them coming in an eight-minute spell before the hour mark. Briana Osborne also bagged a brace for the victors.

Franklin United also hit ten in a wild game at Trigg Arena, where Northland were on level terms early then struck twice late on to make the final 10-3 scoreline a tad more respectable from their perspective. Sarah Carpenter and Jacqueline David both struck hat-tricks for the travelling team - in seven minutes in the latter's case! - while Nikita Lieshout struck twice for the South Auckland outfit.

Birkenhead United were in six-shooting mood at McLennan Park, humbling Papakura City 6-0 but only after scoring three in the last eight minutes. Jaime Govind helped herself to two goals in a round which saw Cambridge score all their goals in the second half as they overcame Tauranga Blue Rovers 4-0, with three of their substitutes netting after coming off the bench.

Fellow Waikato side Waikato Unicol also advanced, a stoppage time winner from Charli Christensen-Rose seeing them edge out Onehunga-Mangere United 2-1 on a day Uni-Mount Bohemian Celtic continued their good form in their Cup campaign, seeing off Greenhithe 3-0 at Bill McKinlay Park, where all the goals were scored in the first half.

CENTRAL REGION
Wellington Phoenix, in coach Katie Barrott's final game in charge before heading abroad, gave her a fitting farewell as they handed Wellington United a 3-0 hiding at their Newtown Park fortress, thanks to goals from Ella McMillan, Rebekah Trewhitt and Alyssha Eglinton.

In the all-Central Region Premier Women's League tie, a brace of Isabella Yarwood goals inside the opening half-hour earned Marist Palmerston North a 2-1 win at Moturoa, with Sasha Rasmussen setting up a grandstand finish at Onuku Taipari Domain as the home team sought in vain to keep their Kate Sheppard Cup dreams alive.

One of the upsets came at Dave Farrington Park, where Grace Cody's stoppage time winner saw Miramar Rangers oust Kelly Cup runners-up Victoria University 1-0. There were no such dramas at Martin Luckie Park, however, with Waterside Karori recording the biggest win of the round, blitzing Brooklyn Northern United 13-0.

Renee Bacon led the way with a hat-trick for "The Magpies", while Emma Kruszona and Nikki Furukawa both struck twice in a round which saw five different goalscorers on target as Te Kotahitanga ousted North Wellington 5-1 at Mazengarb Park.
The other all-Capital Premier Women's League tie was decided on penalties, Upper Hutt City prevailing 6-5 on spot-kicks after they had shared six goals with Island Bay United in a ding-dong go at Wakefield Park.

Two goals in the last ten minutes of normal time from Cadhla McLaughlin dragged City back from the brink of the exit door, after Naomi Boardman's brace had given United a seemingly unassailable advantage.

SOUTHERN REGION
Nelson Suburbs' passage into the last 32 was made a great deal easier by FC Nelson, who defaulted to their crosstown rivals earlier in the week. Cashmere Technical were also little troubled as they swept Selwyn United aside 5-0, five different goalscorers contributing to their triumph.

Coastal Spirit marked goalkeeper Una Foyle's farewell performance by brushing aside Canterbury Universities 4-0, with Lauren Dabner and Saskia Pelham both netting twice inside the opening half-hour as Spirit made amends for dropping points against the students in Mainland Premier Women's League action a week ago.

The draw in the Mainland region was remarkable as the ties were the exact reverse of last week's league fixtures between the same teams. And Nomads-Waimakariri United gained sweet revenge for their league defeat by coming from behind to down Halswell United 2-1 at Halswell Domain, where Abby Taylor netted the winner deep in stoppage time.

Big scorelines were the order of the day among the Football South teams, with Dunedin City Royals amassing their fair share as Invercargill Thistle were swept aside 11-0, Abby Rankin leading the way with a hat-trick on a day Nieve Collin and Rose Morton both struck twice for the rampant Royals.

Jemma Wilson struck twice in three minutes as Roslyn Wakari rolled Northern 4-0, while Tyler Andrews and Rebecca Walker netted a brace apiece as Queens Park skittled Grants Braes 6-0, the majority of their strikes hitting the net in the second spell. And Otago University needed extra time to see off Green Island 5-0 at Sunnyvale Park.
