Travelling Teams Hit The Matariki Goal Trail
by Jeremy Ruane
Travelling teams scored 23 of the 30 goals scored in the Matariki weekend round of Lotto Northern Women's Championship on June 15, as league leaders Melville United maintained their six-point advantage at the top of the table with the halfway point in the season having been reached.

Tarena Ranui's charges had the pleasure of playing on the Kiwitea Street carpet this weekend, and Central United found themselves three goals down inside the first ten minutes, before a further three goals in a six-minute spell saw six goals on the scoreboard by the half-hour mark.

Eight was enough for Melville in the end, Mia Humphrey netting five of them. Laura Bennett chimed in with another to her tally, while substitute Lola Williams and one of the original Young Ferns, Rebecca Brown, also had extra reason to celebrate the leaders' 8-0 win.

Onehunga Sports maintained their second placing on the table, and, when former Football Fern Pip Meo struck twice in the first twenty minutes, must have fancied their chances of recording a big win over Onehunga-Mangere United at Waikaraka Park.

But "The Scarlets" dug in, and fought their way back into the contest, their reward being a Steph Jones strike on the hour, the only other goal in a match which the absentee-hit "Green Machine" edged 2-1.

Across town at Shepherds Park, Franklin United twice came from behind to down Birkenhead United 4-2, a brace of goals apiece from Sarah Carpenter and Britney Cunningham-Lee suffice to secure the points for the Kate Sheppard Cup quarter-finalists, Jaime Govind and Grace Chitty the players responsible for twice giving the home team the lead.

The goals flowed like fine wine at John Kerkhof Park, thirteen of them all told, with Northern Rovers scoring a stirring 10-3 victory over Cambridge to leap-frog them on the table, Lauren Smyth leading the charge with four goals.

Orla Chambers bagged a hat-trick - one from the penalty spot - for the visitors, for whom Agatha Griffiths, Izzy Lomax and Jess Coyle also had reason to celebrate. As did Bella Stark - who scored twice - and Caitlyn Varcoe for Cambridge, who had only conceded seventeen goals in their previous nine league games.

Twelfth round action next Sunday spotlights the clash of Franklin and Onehunga, third versus second, at the Drury Sports Complex. Elsewhere, local derbies abound - Melville welcome Cambridge to Gower Park, while North Harbour bragging rights will be on the line at McFetridge Park on a day "The Scarlets" and Central square off at Mangere Domain.
