Sports And Melville Tied At Top
by Jeremy Ruane
Melville United and Onehunga Sports continue to enjoy the perfect start in the Lotto Northern Women's Championship after "The Green Machine" inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Birkenhead United at Shepherds Park, the beaten side having kicked off the April 13 round of action level on points with the aforementioned clubs.

Second half goals from Annie Byrne and Amy Wells clinched the points for Sports, who trail Melville on goal difference after the Gower Park outfit overpowered Onehunga-Mangere United 7-0 at the venue.

Early goals from Tyla Webster and Freya Douglas gave United the edge on "The Scarlets", who were swept aside in the second spell by a five-goal tsunami, four of them scored by Melville's substitutes.

Lola Williams helped herself to two goals in three minutes around the hour mark after coming off the bench at half-time, while fellow replacements Mia Humphrey and Stevie-Lee Tiller also got in on the act before Webster wrapped up the scoring against the league newcomers.

An Izzy Lomax double either side of the half-time whistle clinched the points for Northern Rovers at Kiwitea Street, Central United's goal in their 2-1 loss being scored halfway through the second spell by Sylvia McDougall.

Meanwhile, Cambridge scored the upset of the round, overturning Franklin United 3-2 at John Kerkhof Park, where Britney Cunningham-Lee bagged a brace of goals for the beaten side, who led 2-1 at this stage, having fallen behind to a Bella Stark strike on the stroke of half-time.

Cambridge introduced Caitlyn Varcoe for the second spell, and she netted twice in the last ten minutes to clinch a first-ever win at this level for the home team, who won promotion to the Championship after clinching the WaiBOP Women's Premiership in 2024.

Northern welcome Cambridge to McFetridge Park on Easter Sunday, with the other fourth round fixtures taking place on Good Friday. Melville should prove too strong for Central at Gower Park, while Franklin and Birkenhead meet at the Drury Sports Complex on a day "The Scarlets" take on "The Green Machine" at Mangere Domain in the Onehunga derby.
