Results largely went with form in the King's Birthday weekend round of Kate Sheppard Cup action throughout the nation, with the biggest casualty being the 2013 winners, who suffered a humiliating record defeat on home turf at the hands of their arch-rivals.
NORTHERN REGION
Eastern Suburbs came from 3-1 down to edge Hamilton Wanderers 4-3 in one of two all-Lotto Northern Premier League ties in the last 32 of the Kate Sheppard Cup, Natalie Young scoring either side of half-time under the Porritt Stadium lights to put "The Blue Army" in command after Yukino Nishizono's "oggie" had been cancelled out by a Saki Yoshida strike for the visitors.
"Lilywhites" gaffer Katie Hoyle turned to her youngsters to retrieve the situation, and after Isabella Atkinson had reduced the arrears, Millie Boyle restored parity fifteen minutes from time before netting a stoppage time winner to break Hamilton's hearts and hopes of an extended run in the Cup this season.
The other top-flight tussle was as one-sided a 1-0 affair as you're likely to see, as a feeble Fencibles United display gave West Coast Rangers scant cause for concern at Riverhills Park, where the visitors prevailed 1-0 courtesy Marissa Porteous' close-range header from a Cat Smith corner halfway through the first half.
Millie Luxton hit the post prior to the goal, but that was as close as "Fencies" got in this duel, Nicole Stratford's commanding defensive display snuffing out the vast majority of anything United tried to retrieve the situation on a day Caelan Tremain prevented the visitors from recording a greater margin of victory with a string of fine saves.
Other Premier League teams had it every bit as easy, with Hollie Leona, Cat Pretty and Kimberley Oosterbeek all on target for Ellerslie as "The Ponies" cantered to a 3-0 win over Birkenhead United at Shepherds Park.
Auckland United gave Cambridge the runaround at Keith Hay Park, Rene Wasi's hat-trick - her second goal was quite superb - leading the home team to a 7-0 triumph, with two further goals disallowed and some glaring misses as well.
Angela Pivac chimed in with a first half brace for the victors, while Talisha Green and the returning Ruby Nathan - who is in between seasons at Canberra United, much like Wellington Phoenix's A-League Women's players - also found the net as the Oceania champions gave a few youngsters a taste of first-team football in the second spell.
Hibiscus Coast struggled with the mantle of favouritism early doors at Bill McKinlay Park, and could well have found themselves trailing to a plucky Uni-Mount Bohemian Celtic side on Friday evening. But Hannah Gray's goal on the half-hour settled "The Coasters"' nerves, and Cerys Houghton's strike five minutes before the interval put them well on course for victory.
The second half saw the visitors run riot, but only after the introduction of Grace Chitty, who scored with her first touch before going on to complete a hat-trick. Danica Urlich-Beech matched that feat, while Kirsty Gage struck twice and Charley March also got in on the act before the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Jess McKimm, off whom Gabrielle Hislop's attempted clearance ricocheted into the net in stoppage time to the natives' delight.
Cup holders Western Springs negotiated a potential banana skin tie at Tauranga Moana, who were on level terms at the interval thanks to Sinead Doherty equalising Rhee Morrison's early opener for "The Hoops".
Maia Vink's charges kicked off after the interval, Maia Lythe and Megan Lee securing Springs' passage into the next round, where they'll hope to be drawn against one of the two Lotto Northern Women's Championship teams who'll be in Cup action once more in a fortnight.
Northern Rovers eked out a 3-1 win on penalties over Onehunga Sports after they had produced a 3-3 thriller at McFetridge Park, where the visitors dominated proceedings but had to come from behind three times, the last of those coming with the very last kick of the regulation ninety minutes.
Rovers got off to a flying start, Gigi Cliffe netting after 77 seconds, but Taylor Bell fired "The Green Machine" level in the seventh minute, only for an absolutely bonkers "oggie" to restore Rovers' advantage three minutes later.
Sivitha Boyce's back-pass went beyond Hannah Carter, who raced back in a bid to keep the ball out. Fortunately for the stand-in goalkeeper, the post intervened. Unfortunately for Carter, the ball rebounded off the upright onto her leg, off which it ricocheted into the net - Keystone Cops in the Kate Sheppard Cup!
Further drama followed, Sports squandering the chance to level the scores again five minutes later as Holly Patterson's penalty was splendidly saved by Sasha Brett, who'd played as a striker for Rovers' reserves in the curtain-raiser.
She was beaten for a second time by Bell in the 37th minute before denying Jess Freeman's long-range piledriver in brilliant fashion. The post came to Rovers' rescue as Kate Inwood went close in the 73rd minute, but the home team exploited another defensive blunder to regain the lead once more, Claire Bachmann bagging what looked like being the winner eight minutes from time.
Sports wouldn't be denied, however, and deep in stoppage time - the fifth minute of the minimum four that had been indicated, an Inwood corner found its way to the far post, where Annie Byrne was lurking to bury a dramatic equaliser with quite literally the last kick of the tie.
That forced extra time, during which both had chances to win the tie, but these were two very tired teams come the final whistle, meaning penalties would decide the outcome. The first three spot-kicks either hit or cleared the crossbar, while Sports' third attempt, a Byrne piledriver, was saved with her face by Brett, seconds after she'd scored the first penalty in a shoot-out which was ultimately won by Lisa Witberg's twelve yard rocket for Rovers.
Six goals were also shared in regulation time at the Drury Sports Complex, where Franklin United needed the extra half-hour to see off Waikato Unicol 6-3 after the visitors had stormed to a 3-1 lead inside the first twenty minutes.
Jess Sizer's early strike was supplemented by a brace of Charli Christensen-Rose goals as the students rattled the Championship side, for whom Marlies James netted on the quarter-hour. By the half-hour mark, the scores were level courtesy a brace of Jacqueline David goals, but remarkably, that was the last of the scoring until extra time rolled round.
David's early goal completed her hat-trick, but it wasn't until the last two minutes, when Sarah Carpenter and Britney Cunningham-Lee, struck late goals, that Franklin's passage into the last 32 was secured at the expense of a Waikato Unicol team which gave their higher-ranked opponents an almighty scare.
The cut and thrust of league action returns this weekend, with Western Springs kicking off the latest round of Lotto Northern Premier Women's League activity when hosting Ellerslie at Seddon Fields on Friday night.
Sunday's fare sees Fencibles welcoming Auckland to Riverhills Park, while West Coast host Hamilton at Fred Taylor Park and "The Coasters" entertain "The Lilywhites" at Stanmore Bay Reserve.
In Lotto Northern Women's Championship action on the Sabbath, Sports and Central United square off in a Central Auckland derby at Waikaraka Park, while Tauranga make the trip to Shepherds Park to take on Birkenhead. Northern and Melville grace

CENTRAL REGION
Convincing victories were de rigeur in the four Central Region ties, Wellington Phoenix recording the biggest success when battering Seatoun 9-0, led by a Liv Ingham hat-trick. Alyssha Eglinton struck twice in the rout, Wellington scoring seven of their goals inside the first thirty-two minutes to guarantee their passage early doors.
Ela Jerez, Ella McCann, Daisy Brazendale and Kyra Elder also got in on the act as the A-League Women's club ran riot at Seatoun Park, fielding a number of players who took part in last season's National Women's League competition.
Petone powered to a 5-1 win over Upper Hutt City at Petone Memorial Park, Ellen Fibbes leading the way with a first half double. Emily Yates and Phoebe Gray, from the penalty spot, also netted before the interval, as did City's Rebecca Stewart, with Olivia Gibbs the only player to score in the second spell.
Melissa McKenna struck either side of the half-time whistle as she led Marist Palmerston North to a 4-1 triumph over Te Kotahitanga, for whom Madison Beetham equalised after Ruby-Aroha Gurnick gave Marist the early lead at Arena Manawatu, Marina Ishimoto restoring the home team's advantage soon after the scores had been levelled.
4-1 was also the outcome at Martin Luckie Park, where Waterside Karori made a quick-fire start to their tie with Miramar Rangers, scoring thrice in the first nine minutes. Carena Oosterbaan bagged a brace during this time - she certainly got plenty of kick from her morning coffee! - while Renee Bacon struck in between times to put "The Magpies" on easy street.
Emma Kruszona made it four on the half-hour, soon after which Rangers goalkeeper Stella Pratt was sent off for committing a professional foul. Remarkably, 'twas the ten women who scored the only other goal in the game, Abigail Kilkolly's goal securing a second half victory for Miramar as one of the most successful clubs in the history of NZ women's football bowed out of its flagship competition in the round of thirty-two.
That was "The Magpies"' second win this week, Nikki Furukawa scoring the only goal of the game at Wakefield Park as they edged out Victoria University 1-0 in a rescheduled Central Region Premier Women's League encounter to climb up to second place in the standings.
Two of the unbeaten teams clash in this Saturday's feature fixture, leaders Wellington United heading to Onuku Taipari Domain to take on Moturoa. Elsewhere that day, Petone take on Taradale at Petone Memorial Park, while the students and Marist meet at Boyd Wilson Park on a day "The Magpies" welcome Seatoun to Karori Park.

SOUTHERN REGION
An era of dominance is well and truly over in the South Island, with Coastal Spirit handed their heaviest ever defeat by arch-rivals Cashmere Technical at Linfield Park, where the visitors ran riot at the expense of their long-time nemesis.
6-0 was the outcome of this one-sided affair, Cashmere spreading the goals around as they put Spirit to the sword. Anna McPhie, Lily Fisher and Kate Loye condemned Coastal to defeat inside the first half-hour, while Margi Dias, Aimee Phillips - from the penalty spot - and Lainey Altieri-Need rubbed salt in gaping wounds after the interval.
Nelson Suburbs advanced to the last sixteen by default after their tie with Nomads-Waimakariri United, originally scheduled for Sunday, was brought forward twenty-four hours to the fixture scheduling debacle arising from the last round of Mainland Premier Women's League action. NWU were unable to field a side as rearranging personal commitments at short notice proved impossible for the travelling team.
Nelson's league clash with Selwyn United was rescheduled for Monday at Saxton Fields, where the home team prevailed 8-0 to earn a third-placed finish and direct qualification into the South Island Women's Championship.
Gillian Morgan and substitute Lauren Sloan led the charge with a brace of goals apiece, Nelson's triumph leaving fourth-placed Canterbury Universities to play off against Roslyn Wakari, the third placegetters in the Football South Premier Women's League, for the final spot in the island-wide competition this Saturday, quite likely in Timaru.
Further south, three first half goals ensured Otago University moved into the next round as they saw off Queens Park 3-0, while Dunedin City Royals relied on a brace of Raegan Potter goals just shy of the hour mark to see off Roslyn Wakari 2-0 at Logan Park.
The South Island Women's Championship commences on June 22, but there's midweek action this Wednesday in the Morrison Mitsubishi Reta Fitzpatrick Cup, with Hornby United seeking to upset Selwyn at English Park.
