Two-Horse War At The Top
by Jeremy Ruane
Melville United and Onehunga Sports carried on their winning ways in the Lotto Northern Women's Championship on Easter weekend, extending their advantage over the chasing pack with solid wins on Good Friday.

"The Green Machine" swept Onehunga-Mangere United aside 6-0 at Mangere Domain, Sophie Stevenson helping herself to a first half hat-trick, with her first goal scored inside the opening sixty seconds.

"The Scarlets" were always facing an uphill battle after that early setback, and midfield general Hayley Bilk ensured there would be no way back for the home team by the quarter hour. Former Football Fern Pip "Pocket Rocket" Meo and substitute Ella Cains added the extras after half-time.

Melville, meanwhile, came from behind to down Central United 3-1 at Gower Park, where Sylvia McDougall gave the visitors a seventh minute lead. They held out for another hour before the withdrawal from the fray of midfield general Robyn Wilkinson gave the home team a way back into the contest.

They didn't waste it, scoring thrice in a fifteen-minute spell, with substitute Stevie-Lee Tiller's strike bookended by a brace of Laura Bennett goals, taking the youngster to six for the season, and, more importantly from Melville's perspective, preserving their lead over Sports on goal difference.

Franklin United are getting their season back on track after a sluggish start, with Good Friday's 3-1 win over Birkenhead United at the Drury Sports Complex lifting them into third place on the table, ahead of their beaten rivals on goal difference.

Britney Cunningham-Lee scored her customary goal on the half-hour to double Franklin's lead, afforded them by Sarah Carpenter in the twelfth minute. The latter restored their two-goal advantage halfway through the second spell, Charlotte England having halved the deficit in the shadows of the half-time whistle.

On Easter Sunday at McFetridge Park, an own goal just after the half-hour mark by Northern Rovers captain Michele Hogg proved to be the only one of the game to send Cambridge home with three points thanks to this 1-0 win, a result which leaves them in a three-way tie for third with Franklin and Birkenhead.

Next weekend's round sees a fair few derbies taking place, the action kicking off on Anzac Day evening, with the North Harbour derby taking place at Shepherds Park. Sunday's schedule sees a Waikato derby set down for John Kerkhof Park, while Central and OMU meet at Kiwitea Street in a Central Auckland derby. Down the road at Waikaraka Park, the only exception to the derbies theme pits "The Green Machine" up against Franklin.

Kate Sheppard Cup also gets under way on Anzac Day weekend, with two ties scheduled in the northern region. Hamilton Wanderers and Te Awamutu meet at Porritt Stadium on Anzac Day, while Whakatane Town welcomes Ngunguru to Rex Morpeth Park on Saturday.
