OMU Claims Spotlight With First Win Of Season
by Jeremy Ruane
Onehunga-Mangere United scored their first win of the season in the Lotto Northern Women's Championship on June 29, coming from behind to upset Central United 2-1 at Mangere Domain, where Sylvia McDougall gave the visitors the lead halfway through the first half.

Defeat in this contest would have left "The Scarlets" with a mountain to climb much higher than the one where they are based, but to their eternal credit they turned things round, Sena Ogawa-Bracey's leveller ten minutes before half-time being supplemented by substitute Pippa Carr's match-winner with six minutes to go - a huge win for the home team, who closed to within three points of Central with this welcome victory.

At the other end of the table, Melville United extended their lead to eight points with nine rounds to play after coming from behind to down Cambridge 3-1 at Gower Park, thanks in large part to a brace of Laura Bennett goals, the first of which pegged back the advantage afforded the visitors halfway through the first half by Bella Stark.

Nyah Nikau's go-ahead goal on the hour was backed up by Bennett's sixteenth goal of the season sixteen minutes from time, as United's closest rivals shared four goals in a game, the outcome of which did neither side any favours.

Franklin United and Onehunga Sports shared the spoils at the Drury Sports Complex, Pip Meo's brace for "The Green Machine" matched by the efforts of Georgia Fisher and Becky Hawker for the Delivereasy Kate Sheppard Cup quarter-finalists in this 2-2 draw, with all the scoring taking place in a twelve-minute spell before half-time.

At the other end of the motorway, Birkenhead United claimed North Harbour bragging rights by battering Northern Rovers 5-1 at McFetridge Park, where Charlotte England opened the scoring for the visitors after five minutes.

Orla Chambers' goal for Rovers halfway through the first half reduced a deficit doubled by Grace Chitty five minutes earlier, and she went on to complete a hat-trick for the victors before undoing all her good work by getting herself sent off in stoppage time after committing a second bookable offence. Shayden Cathro also found the net for Birkenhead in this North Harbour derby.

Next Sunday's fare sees Birkenhead and Melville meeting at Shepherds Park on a day Cambridge and Central clash at John Kerkhof Park, while Sports and Rovers draw swords at Waikaraka Park. But Franklin's Kate Sheppard Cup quarter-final with Eastern Suburbs at the Drury Sports Complex is the match on which most attention will be centred next Sunday.
