Onehunga's most frequent visitor in 1967, during which year - in April, to be precise - she commenced the first coastal container service, she was withdrawn from this service in mid-1968, and was chartered by United Salvage Proprietary Ltd for use as a depot and accommodation vessel during the salvage of "Wahine", New Zealand's most remembered maritime disaster which occurred on 10 April 1968.
Just prior to the completion of that salvage operation, she was sold to her charterers in October 1972, after which she went on to serve interests in Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand.
In 1988 she was abandoned in Port Moresby, and was scuttled in deep water off Papua New Guinea's capital on 21 November 1988.
