"Hunte" was the first ship of South Pacific Shipping, and provided a trans-tasman service linking Onehunga, New Plymouth, Nelson and the northern New South Wales port of Yamba, through which Brisbane was served.
The service proved short-lived, however, with the preparations at Yamba's wharf well behind schedule. After just four calls at Onehunga, "Hunte" was withdrawn from the service, instead commencing an Auckland - Sydney operation, and, later, a Tauranga - Auckland - Brisbane run.
South Pacific Shipping went into liquidation in February 1998, since when "Hunte" has changed hands on a couple of occasions, and remains in operation today in the Mediterranean.
She was stranded following a storm at De Koog on the Dutch island of Texel in January 2001, and was refloated by tugs some three weeks later.
