Built in Glasgow for the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, she was powered by an Atlas Polar 850 bhp diesel engine, and was fitted with electric auxilliaries and electric winches driven by two 55kw Ruston and Hornsby generators.

She had her fair share of "experiences" while operating around the coast. She ran aground off Taranaki's Waiweranui Point on 14 July 1956, while fire was discovered in the no. 2 hold on 10 August 1966, while en route from Wellington to Dunedin.
On 3 July 1990, she sprang a leak in the South China Sea near Paracel Island and sank.
